Florida Virtual School (FLVS) is a publicly funded school district and, since its founding in 1997, the first statewide internet-based public school district in the United States. It delivers Kindergarten-12 online education across Florida and, through nationwide partnerships, to schools and districts elsewhere in the country. In the 2024-25 school year it served more than 250,000 students, drawing on more than 25 years of leading K-12 online education.
Instruction is delivered by Florida-certified teachers, who provide one-to-one support alongside live teaching and flexible pacing. Students follow individualised programmes with round-the-clock access to the FLVS Online Course Platform, which carries over 200 courses: NCAA-approved core subjects, electives, Advanced Placement, world languages and career and technical education. The model is designed to allow study at any time and place, without a fixed classroom or timetable.
Beyond its own enrolment, FLVS extends its work through FlexPoint Virtual School, a virtual school offering that reaches beyond Florida, and through the licensing of its curriculum to schools and districts nationwide. It also supplies digital learning lab solutions to partner schools. Its stated emphasis is on equity - ensuring that geography does not constrain educational opportunity - and on accessible, high-quality education irrespective of a student's circumstances.
