Tuition-free public charter school network serving nearly 2,000 PreK-12 students across campuses in Memphis, TN and Birmingham, AL, with a focus on college readiness, literacy and character development.
Freedom Preparatory Academy is a network of tuition-free public charter schools serving students in grades PreK-12. Founded in 2009 with an inaugural class of 90 sixth-grade students, it has grown from a single school into a multi-campus network across Memphis, TN and Birmingham, AL, and now serves nearly 2,000 students. The network states that it has exceeded local and state averages in math and surpassed local benchmarks in English Language Arts on state assessments for 15 years.
Teaching takes place in a structured, academically rigorous environment focused on core subjects, advanced academic skills and character development. English language instruction sits within a broader college-readiness programme that holds students to high academic standards and extends learning beyond the classroom through field lessons and college visits, intended to build the confidence and skills needed for higher education.
Alongside academics, the network prioritises socio-emotional learning to foster student connectedness and belonging, with character development built on five core values: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Excellence and Community. The stated mission rests on the belief that every child deserves a high-quality public education, with a longer-term focus on transforming education across the American South.
