KIPP operates a national network of tuition-free, college-preparatory public charter schools serving students and families across the United States.
KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) is a network of tuition-free, college-preparatory public charter schools in the United States. Founded in 1994 by Teach For America corps members Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin, it began with 47 fifth graders in a single Houston classroom and now comprises 279 schools serving nearly 125,000 students across 28 regions, staffed by more than 16,000 educators.
The organisation's academic model rests on several elements of interest to teaching candidates: high expectations and academic rigor, a college-preparatory curriculum, explicit attention to character development alongside academics, and extended learning time. KIPP describes a "Team and Family" philosophy built on deep partnership between families and teachers, and states a belief that all students, regardless of background or zip code, deserve and can achieve an excellent education.
Alongside its schools, KIPP operates KIPP Forward, an alumni support programme that accompanies students through college and beyond. The network's stated commitment to students is long-term rather than confined to the K-12 years. The organisation's work sits within the education, public charter school and nonprofit sectors, with a focus on college access and persistence.
